This project aimed at achieving the above by digging deep into the cultural heritage of the Naga's from Nagaland, India. To create a range of soft furnishings showcasing the textiles unique to the region. This project was a first-hand opportunity to learn and study the art of loin loom weaving, challenges, the scope for innovation and opportunities. Gained insights working with women weavers and clusters which provided an exceptional learning experience about the handwoven textiles of the region.
Inspired by the Naga Tattoo, the motifs are stylised from some of the Naga tribes inked on their bodies. These tattoos were used to distinguish children, adolescents, adults, common man, warrior, the unmarried, the betrothed, the married and recent mothers or members belonging to a particular group. It signified a person’s maturity, coming of age or having passed on from one stage of life to another. It was an obligation for both sexes as the common belief was that only people with tattoo marks were ensured a safe passage into the afterlife and headhunting achievements.
These textiles are hand woven on the back-strap loom. It is one of the oldest and the simplest devices used to weave cloth with no external devices attached. The loom is portable and can be woven anywhere. The colours, design, and size of the warp is an important step before weaving .
