This project aims at transforming ramie fibre into products. Being the medium between design and community to bring a livelihood and sustainable income to the families in Meghalaya . Using the traditional skills and knowledge practised for centuries and the excellent craftsmanship available across Meghalaya, India to create handwoven products for interiors and spaces.

This piece is made from wasted fibres and yarn which is felted together to produce a modern object that can ignite discussions on new craftsmanship in the country. Playing with natural lights, this piece of art symbolises the creativity of the designer in enhancing the finer points and style of this craft. The goal is to reuse all the wasted fibre in making lanterns, coasters and other products in the future.

Woven on a 6ft tapestry loom, this piece is made using raw ramie fibre as the weft and cotton as the warp.
THIS PIECE OF TEXTILE IS HAND WOVEN ON THE FLOOR LOOM IN TWO PANELS. WITH TASSEL "JYRTHIAW"AT THE ENDS AND DETAILING AT THE JOINERY.
Design intervention happens at all stages from the yarn to the final product. In designing a textile piece with the artisans, paying close attention to their skill, the craft and the materials used. The techniques for design intervention will intersect the craftsmanship at different levels leading to higher levels of quality in modern objects and varieties.
These interventions have a strong impact on the the weaving community of Meghalaya. The skilled artisans and their family with shared interests, values and thoughts who takes part in these activities are from the farmer to the weaver. It creates a focal point for job opportunities, exchange of knowledge, bringing people together, giving a sense of ownership, generates learning and well meaning and developing a vision for the future.
Discovering new ways for better fibre extraction and knowledge sharing to the farming community
Experimenting with the fibres under different conditions to create a range of fibres of different textures and feel.
The ramie is knitted creating a surface which making it stretchable.
